Riu Palace Review

My wife and I love to travel, and really enjoy new places, and unique destinations. Last year, we traveled for our anniversary to Playa del Carmen, Mexico (about 45 minutes south of Cancun) and stayed a week at the "Riu Palace" hotel/Resort.

Overall Impression - we really enjoyed our time at the Riu Palace. People were friendly, the food was good, the room was adequate, and the beach was amazing.

Room - The rooms are rather plain. Nothing too special, but very clean and very practical. Our first night was very noisy - we were on the backside of the disco from the neighbor resort. Housekeeping did a fabulous job. Our mini-fridge was well stocked - I left a note with an extra tip to load the fridge with Diet Coke, and it was well stocked daily.

Food - the food was amazing! I think I gained 10+ pounds during our week. We dined mostly at the buffet, but ventured out to all restaurants at one time or another. Amazing!

Beach - VERY NICE! I had never been to a caribbean beach before, only pacific coast beaches. Loved the lounges, the beach bar (diet coke!). The beach got crowded in the late morning, but as long as you stayed in the Palace area, you are fine. The palace mostly caters to couples, so not any kids around. Very quiet.

Entertainment - Really not very good. Mostly watched because it was there. Never stayed more than 15 minutes. The food and beach more than made up for the lack of entertainment.

Misc - We really enjoyed walking along the beach, and spending time wandering around Playa del Carmen. Very nice restaurants and shops. We also took advantage of the snorkeling tour - a must! They made it really easy.

We also rented a car for a day and went into Tuluum. Highly recommended. When we got back, many were surprised that we had the "Courage" to navigate through the area driving ourself. We had no problem - it was VERY easy!

I would recommend this trip for anyone that is looking for a quiet romantic vacation. Not for someone who really needs a party atmosphere. Great place to really get away from it all.
