Graduation Party: Open House Theme Ideas

I have had the privilage of working with High School students and their familites for a lot of years. It seems that the "Graduation Open House" concept has gained in popularity as parents and family try and think of creative ways to celebrate together and honor the graduate.

Moving away from a plain "open house" to a themed event can add some spice to your get together. Here are some of the more popular themes:

1) College Party - This theme is one of the simplier options. If your son/daughter has plans in the fall to go away to college, use the college as the center of the theme. Rather than using their current school colors, use the colors of the college they are planning on attending. Decorate the house with college pennants, posters, and other college items. Provide key chains, mini-penants, magnets, or other inexpensive items as "party favors". If your graduate has a sport they play, or a major selected already, tie that into the theme as well.

2) Hawaiian Luau - Another easy theme to make happen. Most party stores have a wide assortment of "Hawaiian" party supplies. Provide an inexpensive Lei for each guest. Serve drinks with mini-umbrellas, and offer a smoothie bar. We also seen Luau's that have purchased a truck load of sand, and created a mini "beach" in their back yard - a small area for sand castles for the kids, etc... Shish Kabobs is a great food option. We have also seen the "build your own kabob" feature, with mini barbeque's built out of three cinder blocks, and a handful of charcoal - these can be spread out around the yard.

3) Movie Theme / Academy Awards / Hollywood - Either use a generic "movie" theme, or pick a movie era. The 1940's is always a fun decade. Play movie soundtracks. Create your own "Walk of Fame" - have guests create their own "star" on Hollywood boulevard filled with kind words to the graduate. Food becomes easy; popcorn, hot dogs, etc... Decorate your house with movie posters from your son/daughters favorite movies. You can have a great time with the invitations, decorations, music, food, and general entertainment. You can also do a drive-in movie theme - this one is lots of fun too!

4) Mexican Fiesta - This creates a great get together, but can also be accomplished on a budget. Besides the standard decorations, food is simple. A taco or burrito bar is simple and inexpensive. This may sound odd, but a pinata is a great idea at this party. One good idea is to have guests bring something specific to the party - a card, money, etc... Fill the pinata up with those items, and have the graduate try and bust it open blindfolded - no one else but the graduate gets to bust it open. Sounds unusual, but I have seen very mature High School student turn into 6 year olds with a pinata.

5) Grease Party - What better way to celebrate high school graduation than with a round of "We Go Together?" Guests can dress up in poodle skirts and leather jackets. Serve retro 1950s soda fountain fare-- burgers, fries, milkshakes. For music, you can go with 1950s classics or simply play the Grease soundtrack.
